Q:  Why would I want my dog to use a treadmill?

A:  Great question! Although it seems silly to some pet owners, there are reasons why using a treadmill is beneficial for your dog:  Controlled activity – For our arthritic and post-op pets this means activity to help maintain and build muscle without running, jumping, or pulling. In winter this means good activity without dangerous slipping that can worsen arthritic conditions. Increased range of motion – For pets with hip arthritis, walking on the treadmill can improve their ability to extend their hip. Regular exercise – If you don’t walk your dog in the winter because it is too cold and icy, the treadmill can be a way for your furry friend to stay in shape. This is very important for dogs that have or are prone to arthritis. Weight control – Treadmill walking can help your dog maintain a healthy weight. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight reduces their risk for arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems.
